"Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving" - Iago Act II Scene iii

As much as I want to disagree with this statement and envelop myself in a world of negligence and delusion, I unfortunately am unable to bring myself to that state. Along many other things, I truly hate reputation, but in the currently world we live in, reputation is so painfully important. Just about everything we do on this miserable, dystopian earth is dictated by reputation. And in effect, everything we do dictated our reputation. It’s quite the vicious cycle, that can’t exactly be broken with ease.
The way I see reputation, it is something that you build. Reputation is like a structure. You view your ideal structure, or reputation, and you build it. Trouble is; the only materials you have are glass, fire and gas. And, for some reason, they are inexhaustible resources, but they are the only ones you have. Additionally, the terrain you are building on is not only as uneven as a serrated knife’s edge, but was also once a warzone, meaning it’s littered with live explosives. Small to medium sized astronomical bodies have also been known to land there on occasions, due to the thin atmospheric layer above head, but thankfully, they’re not nearly as common as the monthly earthquakes or the quarterly tsunamis. I suppose it’s not that bad, as you have some people on occasions helping you build it. You know, when they’re not watching you build it, and are shooting the parts of it they dislike with their rocket launcher.
If you haven’t picked up yet, I’m trying to get the point across that reputation is something that can be shattered, by countless different means. Some of them you can rebuild, while others rip off half your limbs, rendering you unable to repair what has been destroyed. This is much like Iago’s quote, where he says that reputation is lost underserved. Most of the factors in my analogy are out of the control of the builder, demonstrating show simple it is to have your reputation destroyed in the blink of an eye, underserved. Of course, there are many things than you can do to have it deserved, partially or fully, at which point it’s your own bloody fault.
In summary, reputation is something everybody judges. It is of utmost importance, as without it; you are unable to do anything. Reputation defines you. You are nothing without it. It is something you, with extreme difficulty, must construct from the very base. And, it is something than can be destroyed. Partially or outright, temporarily or permanently, naturally or artificially, with or without malicious intent, provoked or unprovoked, blah, blah, et cetera.

    1. This is a great analogy which perfectly highlights how fragile our reputations are. They can be broken with ease despite the months, and years put into its construction. I mean there is only one thing missing from this analogy, something that isn't taken into account. When Iago or Shakespeare says "Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit..." I think he is trying to say that a reputation can often be attained without the necessary credentials to hold that type of reputation. But this a very small component because you address how it can be take away underservingly by others destroying it. Just I feel that as easily it can be destroyed, it can be given unjustly like the typical boss's favorite intern who really isn't as capable as all the others. Perfect analogy though that takes a great deal of creativity :)

    2. Creativity? No. That's just me expressing my sinister yet realist thoughts on a topic. I have an 'unique' way of expressing myself.

I'll be the one plowing through somebody's structure with a tractor, while shooting another's with a fully automatic assault rifle.

As far as your idea on the unnecessary credentials, I would have to agree. It would appear as if I omitted that, but you can't expect much from me after just waking up on a Sunday morning. Nor can you expect much from me any other time or day of the week.

    3. I agree wholeheartedly with your statement that reputation is destroyed easily, and that others seek to destroy it, likely for their own narcissistic, unjustified reasons. However, one aspect of your structure comparison that I disagree with is that a structure can take years to build, your reputation only takes a small amount of time to rebuild your reputation as the masses have an attention span equal to that of a goldfish. Other than that however, it was a good and in depth analogy and good points made overall.

      Delete
    4. I like your points however I found the analogy convoluted. One thing to consider is that reputation only has meaning if you attribute substance to it, although you may be subjected to different treatment or prejudices based on your past behavior. People in a group are more often cynical rather than benevolent, and are much more likely to focus on negative aspects rather than positive ones.

  3. Blog #2: Reputation

In our current society we are fixated on appearance, the content beneath the appearance doesn't have as much influence ore respect as it should. I only know that in first world countries we have adopted a Hollywood-like type of thinking. As we explored in one of our first units of the year, stereotypes are inevitable and judging people is also inevitable. This is a sad reality and is unjust however what if I told you that there is something even worse than that. What if I told you people can completely judge you without them even laying their eyes on you, let alone (god forbid) getting to know you. This phenomenon is reputation. Whether its a valid reputation or a tampered or warped reputation, it doesn't matter! This is a fact we can't ignore; we can't pretend that reputation doesn't matter and we can live without taking it into account. Reputation is an extremely invalid point of reference. For example lets take kids from high school. If a jock who breaks girls' hearts left and right, treats people like shit, cheats on every test and is an overall douchebag he is looked at as superior and his reputation is undeservingly high. It doesn't matter if his actions will catch up to him and effect him; for now he is looked at by colleges as America's future quarterback. When people talk about him it will be about all his achievements. On the other hand there could be someone who does good deeds that go under the radar. This man has been mapping out his future. He respects everyone and takes his education seriously, but isn't athletic. This second guy could make a huge mistake, just one like for example like cheating one test and bang his reputation towards colleges is undeservingly ruined. Its a complex idea that has several factors such as politics, favoritism, and social status.

In Othello the only person who is completely aware and comprehends this doctrine is Iago. He realizes that reputation isn't concrete and can change at any moment therefore being looked at as the bad guy for awhile isn't bad because with the snap of his fingers he can change his reputation with society. The context of this quote is after Cassio was fired for attacking Roderigo. Iago was actually giving great advice to Cassio which was to not be saddened by his ruined reputation and worry more about the wounds suffered from the quarrels. Reputation is often looked at as a stain on a white shirt when in reality it is a blotch of color on a tie dye shirt. Its all about perspective and how to work around the given situation to achieve your goals.

This is a great situation to display how reputation can used to manipulate or is false. While reading the book we all see how suspicious Iago is but Cassio doesn't. Due to this dramatic irony we get to see how Iago's reputation of being a loyal soldier helps him to manipulate Cassio. Cassio thinks that Iago is trying to help him despite the advice actually being good. We also get to see that reputation is mostly a mask and really isn't reliable. Iago seems loyal, but is two faced. Reputation is a great tool for manipulation or a cover of what really is there. Another example is Iago stating towards Cassio that there is NO point in complaining about losing a reputation that wasn't even deserved.

Learning from the book I can say that reputation is a load of crap and even though it is important to utilize to achieve your goals only because of the weight our world has put on it. No one wants their goals to be put into danger because of such a simple minded, judgemental concept such as reputation. I care only about reputation in order to stay on track to my dreams, much like how I eat broccoli to stay healthy. I care much more about who I really am and how I treat myself and others. John Wooden has said that "
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are"

Although my opinion on reputation is different than yours, I like the fact that you notice how fragile reputation is. Also, I admire you point of view on using it as a tool to stay on track to your dreams, just how "you eat broccoli to stay healthy". It is a fact that reputation was and still is extremely important, but that attidude is a fantastic way to oppose to this situation - it represents its siliness in a simple manner.

    2. I have a mixed opinion on your examples, specifically the one about the two high school kids.

Firstly; you mentioned that the 'jock' that treats everyone like dirt would have an undeservingly high reputation, and he would be seen as 'America's next quarterback' or something (What's a quarterback? I can only assume it's some sort of refund.). Quite frankly, I doubt his reputation would be a good one. At least in my biased opinion, he'd be just another window-licking scum that causes a sh*tstorm in a teacup, someone that I would try to not be affiliated at any cost. So, as far as that goes, I would have to disagree with him having an unparalleled reputation.

Alternatively, I would have to mostly agree with your second statement. The other kid appears to have his life sorted out. Now; it is quite unlikely that he'll cheat on a test. Chances are he's intelligent enough to know the answer, or at least know most of the material that even if he does get that question wrong; the effect will be minimal, but whatever. I would agree that yes, his reputation would be destroyed. He will no longer be the kid that is kind, smart, etc, but would instead be the kid that cheated on the test. He reputation would be destroyed, but in this particular case he is to blame.

I get that the general idea you're trying to get across is though. I would have to agree that reputation something that is crushed underservingly. And I can also see what you mean by how it is given underservingly as well.

    3. I really liked reading this and I agree with Andy, I admire your writing style also. It is very eloquent, authentic and easy to relate to! I really like your examples, furthermore the tie dye shirt and broccoli analogies are very genuine as well. Your arguments are not only well thought out, but in addition they are solid and backed up with various examples to support. I totally agree with your statements and how reputation is gained or lost with the blink of an eye, so to speak. I was trying to find something that I did not necessarily agree with for your blog but I really can not. It was very convincing regardless of people's opinion(s) prior to reading. Your content was not only coherent but the way you phrased it was extraordinary and had a excellent fluidity too.

  4. "Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving" –Shakespeare’s “Othello”, Iago 2.3. 256 – 258
To agree or disagree with Iago there are several aspects one must consider – first of all, it is necessary to define what a reputation is. My understanding of a reputation is the common opinion that people have about someone or something (from Encyclopedia Britannica).
I think that even Iago doesn’t believe in the sentence from the cited excerpt – he expresses it in an ironic way. In my opinion, the situation isn’t only verbally ironic because of what the antagonist says, but Shakespeare also included tragic and situational irony; by now his audience knows how two-faced Iago is and every reader knows how much he cares about his reputation, and that the opinion he has in the eyes of his General will be Iago’s tool to cause the downfall of several heroes in the piece.
The fact that Iago is being ironic when addressing Rodrigo is the best argument to prove how useless and false his evaluation of reputation is. In this scene, he says it just to comfort Rodrigo and convince him to beg the Moor for forgiveness:

“What, man, there are always ways to recover the general again(…)
Sue to him again and he’s yours” 2.3. 259-264

That will be another element of Iago’s cruel intrigue. He was perfectly aware of the fact that – in the Shakespearean era – a person’s reputation was everything. Is it so today?

    Yes. Of course it is.

In the Polish language the situation could be described and supported by a popular ,colloquial saying

“Jak Cię widzą, tak Cię piszą”,

which in the direct translation would mean “How they see you is how they describe you”. The meaning of the proverb is that both physical appearance (aesthetics, style, personal hygiene, hairstyle) and personality (temperament, level of empathy etc.) define the way others look at someone, but the most important are actions. Every grimace or subtle smile sums up to the opinion an individual has about a person, and all those opinions sum up to the general reputation people have about him or her.

Recently, “Life is too short to care about the opinion of other people” is a common exoteric trend in, mostly in the environment of adolescents. There are several weak-minded maxims that people have the tendency to believe in, but this one is for sure one of the most dangerous and destructive.

Let’s imagine the situation of Darren Wilson – a 28 year old police officer from Ferguson in Missouri. On August 9th,this year, he fatally shot Michael Brown, an 18-year-old black man. Brown's death in August of this year has been received by the local black community as a racially motivated crime. The demonstration in the city turned into a clash with the police, which lasted many days. To suppress the riots, the police had used tear gas and grenades; several armored vehicles and assault rifles police officers had appeared on the streets of armored vehicles and police officers armed with assault rifles. That – according to the local media- further infuriated the protesters. The people of the United States and abroad are split, some believe in the acquitting sentence jury, the majority has received that decision furiously – just when listening to the verdict, the demonstrates started throwing various objects at the police spokesman. “The system has failed us again!” - one of the women screamed .

In the fear of further riots and attacks on the shooter, Darren Wilson , the governor of Missouri declared an emergency a week ago and decided to deploy Ferguson to the nearby St. Louis department of the National Guard.

This situation and its attempt to solve it by the most powerful people in the state are proof of how powerful reputation is. Let’s suppose that Wilson would be acquitted. Even in that situation, his reputation caused by his actions is now the reason for incredibly strong beliefs of his culpability. Even discharged, Darren Wilson will never be safe.

  5. I believe that the presented arguments will allow you to draw the same conclusions I did. Iago is absolutely ironic when expressing his opinion on reputation. Even though every person we will ever come into contact with will have a different impression on us, it is our reputation that defines who we are. I think that the actual value of anything that exists is just an average outcome of all the feelings and thoughts that it causes.

    1. With all do respect to you and your opinion, I have to disagree because yes people do judge us by how we act towards them but it is ourselves that depict who we are as a person. We live in a society where most of the time you make ONLY one impression towards someone and it's set in stone. What defines a person in life is a building of a character that you want to earn for YOURSELF. In life, people always say that "we take granted what we love most". So why is it that we care so much about what others think of us?

      P.S

I'm not targeting you, you have a great opinion, I just justifief mine.

    2. Your point Your point with the Michael Brown case is sad to think about because there is a death of a child involved, however I do agree with you. Darren Wilson might actually be a racist, and he might’ve killed Michael Brown just for the fun of it. However according to the court of law he is not guilty,( that doesn't mean he is innocent, it just means that there wasn't enough evidence to put him in jail). If this man did have reasons to shoot Michael Brown it wouldn't have mattered, because everyone in north America is now against him for what he was not allegedly guilty for.

"Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving" - Iago Act II Scene iii

I believe what Iago is saying is that reputation is less than nothing. He's saying that it really isn't worth anything, it is solely a way for others to judge and criticize you and the only way you can lose your reputation is when you yourself start to believe that you should. Meaning that if you feed the uselessness of the reputation than it's importance will grow.

I have a different opinion; I believe reputation is important. Not popularity or social ranking but plainly what kind of person others see you as. I believe with reputation comes respect and respect is very important in leading a successful life. Anything that you do adds on to your reputation in a positive or negative light and whatever you do allows others to determine how trust worthy, hard working and intelligent you are. Reputation is basically the foundation of any opinion some stranger may one day develop on you. Therefore reputation is important in creating good relationships and is also important in creating opportunities for yourself.

    1. I completely agree with your view on reputation. I think it's a necessity for us to have good reputations. It allows us to be able to be successful later on in life, wether it be career-wise, relationship-wise or just in your everyday life. Well written too :)

      Delete
  7. In our world, each and every one of us strive for success. One hidden problem however, with being so blindly ambitious, is that we fail to recognize one limiting factor set forth, how we are viewed by others. In most anything that you can name, your level of success is rated almost completely by the way that others think of it and, because humans are biased creatures, how they view you. The inherent problem with this because the case is that, quite honestly, people are incredibly stupid and stubborn. This means that the entirety of your life will basically be judged in entirety by a bunch of invalids who can only appreciate and therefore, acknowledge as successful that which they agree with. That being said, if you get people to like you, if you can manage to build a reputation that causes people to identify with and respect you to a certain extent, you will rise through the ranks, regardless of your actual abilities to succeed in an intellectual sense. However, being the center of attention, being at the top without working for it has a disadvantage. You will inevitably mess up, catastrophically and, because your reputation has been built under you with cardboard and sticky tack, you will fall, and end up worse for it. The problem is that people love telling a story of another’s downfall, as they believe it will make them more liked, without realizing that we are all fighting the same battle. Because of this, a person’s many accomplishments will be omitted from their reputation, without insanely persistent results, only their few falls will stick to the dartboard of reputation. Because of this, it is never those who are the most qualified who succeed, it is those who can convince others that they have already succeeded until they believe it themselves.

  8. “Reputation is an idle and most fake imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving”-Iago Act II scene iii

I believe what Iago is trying to say is that our reputation is not something that is necessarily a good representation of ourselves, that reputation can be formed because of a rumour, or based on someone’s opinion. Good reputations can go down the drain because of one mistake, or one person’s opinion. He’s saying that a lot of the time, reputations are not the truth that they’re just the words that travel down the grapevine of gossip.

A reputation is what other people see; a reputation is what others will base on one event rather than our actions as a whole. I agree with what Iago is saying, because I believe that our reputation is decided by people’s ability to twist words based on their opinions. The definition of reputation in the oxford English dictionary is “what is generally said or believed about a person’s or thing’s character or standing”. Reputations are just what other people believe; they are what is believed by the general public. Yet, it is we worry about, our reputations are so important to us, because in the world of high school, it sticks with you for 5 years. Reputations are so important to many people because, they want to be seen in a good way. I think we should care more about how we act and how we do things, rather than how others see us. We can’t judge someone based on their reputation, because a reputation is not all there is to a person.

    1. i completely agree with your point of view, i thought the same, a reputation is so important for some reason for kids in high school, i like how you said that theres more to a person than their reputation, because it is true, you cant judge someone because of what you heard from someone else, and that person heard it from another and etc... And i believe that its true, reputations are formed by rumors being passed throughout the school, through many different people and their opinions, and the truth does change, and when the truth changes, lies begin to form and the words that were once said have a whole new meaning. A reputation is like the game "Broken Telephone". the truth alters and a new sentence is made.

A reputation is only rumours and they should not be glorified to describe who someone is. You worded this perfectly! :)

    3. I can very much agree with what you're saying about Iago telling Cassio that a reputation is not a good portrayal of ourselves. However, when you mentioned that reputation is something see, I do think that to a certain degree, reputation is something that you can see for yourself which you can look at and give yourself an idea of what kind of person you are.

  9. Reputation: "the beliefs or opinions that are generally held about someone or something." In Othello, reputation comes up a lot with certain characters; mainly Iago. In act 2 scene 3, Iago, a selfish, revengeful and some might even say evil man, is telling Cassio about how his reputation (Cassio's) doesn't and shouldn't matter. He's basically saying how everything else should come before what others think of him. Some people may agree with this statement, however I do not. To me, reputation matters a lot because I do care what others think of me, to a certain extent. Your reputation defines who you are based on the things you say, do and how you act. It's the idea others have of you, maybe without you even being aware. I (obviously) would want a good reputation and I think I have done a fairly good job of achieving that for myself throughout my years at St. T. I believe that people should care what their reputation is, because it's a definition of them as people. I don't think I know anyone who wants to have a bad reputation or to not be thought of in a good way. I think deep down, no matter what anyone says, everyone cares about their reputation, even Iago. I feel that he's just saying that to Cassio so that he can keep him acting the way that he is so that Iago can finally get revenge on him and Othello. The worse Cassio's reputation is, the better it is for Iago. He's selfish, one of the many characteristics of his bad reputation.

  10. "Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving" - Iago Act II Scene iii

What I believe that Iago is trying to say is that reputation is just something that others think that will describe you. Someone may have a great reputation but with one wrong move or a bad decision people immediately start to think otherwise. A reputation takes a long time to develop but a split second to destroy it. Cassio truly believes that his reputation was ruined because he got drunk, but I agree with Iago’s point of view, basically Iago is simply trying to tell Cassio that his reputation is not ruined, he says that you haven’t lost it until you think you have. Some of Cassio’s reputation might have been lost, but it only truly disappears if Cassio himself stops believing in it. All it takes is hard work and by playing smartly will he ever return on Othello’s good side.

Most of the times reputation plays on the truth, meaning that it’s not always true and its based off the gossip and all the truth that once was, is no longer there, only a tiny portion of the truth lies in a reputation. Reputation is “a fake quality that others impose on you” (Iago) reputations don’t decide how we should feel or act upon. Since we are all in high school, we all seem to want to have good reputations but if someone doesn’t like what they’re known for, then all they have to do is prove and try hard to change it. Reputation is no set in stone, people change, we all make mistakes, and someone’s reputation should not affect someone’s life. Rumors will always spread but we just have to ignore it since we ourselves know the truth and that’s good enough.

    1. I completely agree, I do feel as if reputation is not always the truth. I really like how you mentioned that it is something that takes a long time to develop, but can be ruined in an instant, this is completely true. I also liked that you spoke about how reputation can be changed, and it is not permanent. This is interesting, because many feel like one mistake will impact them forever, but like you said, things change if you work hard to regain the reputation you want. Reputations can be changed, the person can change them for the better, or the general public can change them , most likely for the worse, rumours and opinions will definitely affect your reputation. I think the idea that we just need to ignore rumours and know who we are is interesting, because that is such a difficult task for many people, especially in terms of reputation.

  11. "Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving"

I think what Iago is trying to say is that a reputation is something others inflict on you, and that your reputation can only be ruined if you think it is. You cannot control what your reputation to others is, because your reputation is based on how others see you. Although, when Iago is saying this, it seems as though he is being sarcastic, and does not believe in what he’s saying, but either way, I still partially agree with this statement.

I think a reputation is simply someone’s voiced opinion of one, or a speculation/rumour one might have heard about another. I do not think a reputation is entirely important, because there is no evident proof that you live up to your reputation. I agree that a reputation is useless, but contrary to what I’m saying, I think it is not necessarily a bad thing to have a good reputation and to be known as someone who is for example, very nice and respectful, because today most people value one’s reputation more than anything. Having a good reputation can result in being more highly respected, or treated in a better manner. But just because one might have a good reputation, or even a bad reputation, it doesn’t mean it is all entirely true. Also, I agree that your reputation can only be ruined if you think it is, because if you value others opinions of you, more than you value your own, it can result in unhappiness or believing you lost your “reputation”. I don’t think you can never truly know who someone is, therefore what your speculation of one might be, until you actually get to know them, instead of just believing what others opinions of one are or a rumour. I believe that if you treat others with kindness and value your own opinion of yourself more than others, you won’t ever have to worry about not having a good or bad reputation, because in all honesty, in today’s society, many of us depend on our reputation to get far in life, when in reality a reputation is only a pointless rumour that provides no proof of who someone really is.

  12. "Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving"

I find Iago's statement about reputation to be true. He claims that reputation is based upon unfounded assumptions or false actions. Reputations are there to benefit nothing but idle gossip or superficial discussions. He says that reputations are of no importance and hardly speak to the character of the person in question. I believe he's attempting to express that one shouldn't concern themselves with what others may think or say.

I find that a reputation is something that people assign to an individual so as to be able to gossip or give someone the impression that they could know what that person is thinking. It allows a person to feel as though they have the power and right to assume anything about another, however unbelievable or incredulous. Reputations are of no importance because they often turn out to be wrong or one sided. They're based on the opinions of one individual whose most probably seen half the personality of whom they talk about. In choosing to believe in a person's supposed reputation, you choose to forsake all the other aspects of their being and believe in one part of who they are. It's essentially like dividing a person in two and picking whichever best suits your needs and preferences. It's a choice between believing gin the best of someone, or the worst.

  13. I didn't know if I had to post my blog here as well so I will do it anyway.

The quote: “Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving” - Iago Act II Scene iii means that reputation is an imaginary standard and that people who have a "reputation" often did not do anything to receive it, just like those who lose theirs often did not deserve losing it. This quote is important pertaining to the play because it shows how Iago is trying to make Cassio trust him and lead him to believe that Iago is his friend.

I agree with Iago's statement because someone's reputation is merely how certain individuals see them. This should not define who you are as a person and nobody should ever judge someone prior to talking to them, and actually getting to know them, by their reputation. For example some people see me in an appalling way and many others see me in a rather prodigious way. Nobody sits in the Limbic System part of my brain and knows exactly what I feel or believe in. Needless to say, nobody knows exactly what I'm thinking ever. Unfortunately, I cannot control how others perceive me but I can control how I see myself and how I portray myself onto others. Yes I have made mistakes but then again who hasn't? Your mistakes should not define you as a person. Ideally this should be true but a lot of people in the society we live in today, do not agree with my statement. More and more people are much more concerned with social media and trying to achieve these "Relationship Goals" (as seen via Twitter) or care about how Kanye West is acting like a "gentleman" towards Kim Kardashian as seen on the hit reality tv series: Keeping Up With The Kardashians. I feel that as a whole, we have lost all sense of morals and we have become somewhat of a society filled with degenerate beauty queens because looks, reputations and all affiliated with the delusive surroundings we bathe ourselves in are seen as more important than integrity. I think we should all take a step back and reexamine priorities in our day to day lives. If we would do so then maybe the western world we live in would be a much better place.

I hope to have made somewhat of an impact on anyone who is reading this and I will finish off with the words of Abraham Lincoln:

“Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.”

    1. I agree with you Alessia and I think your post was very well written. I like your point that nobody ever really knows what you're thinking because it’s true. People base reputation on what they think they know about someone even though they may not know everything about that person. I also liked the way you linked it all to society and how everything works now. The quote was a nice touch that really connects to everything you talked about. Overall I think it was well done.

  14. From my point of view, I agree whole-heartedly with Iago's statement of consolation towards Cassio. Reputation is not a tangible, nor according to Iago, meaningful facet, therefore it is useless, and there is no benefit in concerning oneself with their reputation. This quote states that reputation is often earned under false pretenses, and is easily lost for no reason at all. While this is true, reputation does have it's merits. For instance, Iago himself manipulates the reputation and credibility of others in order to twist the knife. In our society, reputation holds a great deal of power. Vilification can literally ruin somebody's life, regardless of whether or not it is from an infallible source. Unfortunately, libel is one of the hardest accusations to prove in a court of law, and anyone can essentially have their life destroyed based on false accusations. Even though slander can be dismissed, accusations will plant the seed of doubt within an individual's mind, which will certainly affect a person's prestige. However, I digress. All this being said, reputation has a powerful impact on a person's life, and while I wish that reputation were meaningless, it still has a very visceral and important meaning to an individual, as well as the masses. It is almost impossible for someone to purge themselves of their reputation and past actions, however, if one were to ignore their reputation, and live with the negative connotations of slander, it would in a sense be worthless to them.

  15. "Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving" - Iago Act 2 Scene 3

To paraphrase what Iago is saying, he states that your reputation is a useless and fake quality, that only others can establish onto you. He also mentions that your reputation can only be wrecked if you believe that it is. He's pretty much saying that even though it is your own reputation, you do not have control over it, other individuals do. Now, I agree and disagree with this statement, here's why...

First off, with the first thing that Iago says (I know that sounds redundant, but whatever), that your reputation is useless and fake; I have to sort of disagree with. I don't think it's completely useless and fake, because everyone you meet will always have mixed opinions about you, which makes it real. Now, where he says it's useless, I partly disagree with, because it is very important in terms of mainly business and education. For example, it basically has the power to get you a job, or not get you a job, depending on if you have a good or bad reputation, it also distinguishes whether someone likes you or doesn't WITH ONLY KNOWING YOUR REPUTATION AND NOTHING ELSE, etc. For any other circumstances, I think that it is useless because no one cares about it anymore.

Secondly, where he says that you don't have control of it, I agree and disagree with. I disagree because it is only YOU that is doing the stuff to earn you this good or bad reputation. And I agree because it is the other people who decide if what you did makes you have a GOOD or BAD reputation. In conclusion, it is a very interesting and confusing topic that I think can go both ways, depending on your opinion.

  16. When considering the circumstances that Iago says this Cassio, we can automatically assume that Iago could be saying this to ensure that he does not fall on Cassio's bad side. Iago doesn't want Cassio realizing "wait a minute, this is the guy that got me into this in the first place." We can thus say that Indigo could be lying to Cassio, to keep up this idea that everyone has that he is "most honorable Iago."

When looking if the statement that reputation is a fake and thus useless quality, is very easily debatable, and can be seen from two different views. For one, when talking personally, I can say that reputation is a very important quality that is (most of the time) essential in forming great relationships with people whom you know to not be the most trusting. It's very simple really, When a person has a bad reputation, he or she is at a big disadvantage when it comes to making bonds with people of whom they wish to talk to. The same can be said when someone you know of bad reputation asks you if they can meet you in a dark alley at 11:30 on a tuesday night, you probably wouldn't go see them, when it comes down to it, its all a question of what other people think of you, (REPUTATION). Reputation can thus to be argued to be a very legitimate and useful quality.

However, there are many cases when looking at someone's reputation can lead to prejudices and thus negating the possibility of a good relationship built on trust. Very often, reputation is something of which we hear of other people but don't necessarily have any proof of. It can also be said, that when one worries too much about their reputation he or she only limits the possibilities of what they can do

  17. “Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving” – Iago Act II Scene iii

Throughout the history of mankind, the idea of one’s reputation seemed to play a large role in the way we decide simple tasks on a daily basis. We are in a constant state of fear of what others might think negatively of us. Although some might say they couldn’t be bothered with the opinion of others, everyone craves the approval that comes from those who rank higher on the social scale.

What Iago is trying to point out here is that one’s positive and negative reputation is usually gained by them not truly earning or deserving it. As much as this statement was applicable to the time period, it had been an unspoken rule since everyone viewed another based upon the rumors they’d hear. Of course this did not apply to everyone as we see that Desdamona was still sweet and humble toward Cassio after the incident. As humans, we tend to latch on to the first bit of information we hear, disregarding any type of contradictory ideas, so if those who hear the story as the much more exaggerated version, they’ll trust this one rather than the truth.

As humans, we love, in fact we crave the juicy gossip that comes with drama and conflict, even if a story is blown ridiculously out of proportion, we would still believe it if it’s heard first because it’s exciting, it’s more interesting than what goes on in the mundane lives of others.

    1. I agree that us, as humans love gossip and that we do seek approval of our peers. As teenagers we fear judgement and we have a need to meet societal norms. I really liked your interpretation of Iago's statement, it is true that Iago's high ranking and reputation is not at all deserved. Othello does not see his real side because he is blinded by Iago's "honest" reputation.

  18. "Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving" - Iago Act II Scene iii

I disagree with this statement because reputation is much more than a false imposition, it is something that is very valuable and esteemed. It is not a false imposition because it is a reflection of yourself and your own actions. That is why I believe it holds such great value. It is something that others impose on us, but they can only make that imposition through our actions, words and behavior. If you have a good reputation, others are more likely to trust you and respect you, whereas, if you have a bad reputation, others will be more skeptical to trust you and are more likely to be disrespectful towards you or start rumors about you. I believe that if someone carries a bad reputation that it is their own fault because their reputation is a reflection of their own actions. If other people talk bad about them or behind their back, it is because of their own behavior alone. Then again, everybody makes mistakes in life, so reputation should not be the only thing someone should base someone else’s character on. If someone is truly sorry for their mistakes and actions, I think that everyone should give them a second chance to reconstruct their reputation. Reputation is not something that is set in stone either, but it is something that you build upon throughout the years. It can be destroyed within a matter of seconds. That is why it is important to reflect on all of your actions in the moment because they can make or break your reputation.

    1. I agree with what you said about how a reputation is not set in stone but can be destroyed in a matter of seconds. I do think that a bad reputation can fade, but it is definitely easier to destroy a good reputation than it is to gain one. I also like what you said about thinking about your actions in the moment because, I agree that all it takes is a moment to destroy a reputation.

  19. "Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving" - Iago Act II Scene iii

I agree with Iago’s statement. He is saying that people don’t necessarily deserve the reputation they get, whether it’s good or bad. He says that a person’s reputation does not accurately describe the person. It is based or how people perceive you and not based on everything that you have done, simply one or a few actions.

People should not be judging others based on reputations. A reputation is based on how some seem that person and then it is spread and putting a certain image of someone into other people’s minds. Also a reputation is not based on someone as a whole, only a few things that a person has done. People get many different reputations based on many different things but if you only go by their reputation you will never truly know the person, just someones point of view. It is always better to get to know someone before forming opinions rather than forming them based on what other people tell you. Maybe they didn’t have a good experience with the person and you might have a good one if you get to know them.

You cannot control what your reputation is, so it is better to not concern yourself with it. You should not be completely deciding who you are and the type of person you are on what other people think about you. You just have to be yourself and let people get to know you and not the reputation you have. We all act different ways towards different people usually based on how well you know them or on experiences you've had with them, someone’s point of view has a high chance of being different than your own.

  20. When you have nothing you still have your reputation. Before anyone even meets you, they can still have a bias towards you based on what is said about you. A bad reputation can ruin lives, for example when someone has a huge court case in which millions of people are watching and against him, people will still be against him even if he’s plead not guilty.
Instead of being satisfied that he isn’t guilty and celebrating his winning case, he now has to worry about millions of people who all of a sudden hate him because they saw the case and sided against him. People in situations like these absolutely cannot go back to living their normal lives, they have to take special measures to ensure they are protected by the thousands of people who want him to suffer whether that be by putting him into jail, or beating him insensibly on the streets. Regardless their lives are now ruined by something they allegedly weren’t even responsible for.
In act 2 scene 3, Iago says “reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving’. Essentially Iago is telling Cassio that he shouldn’t worry about reputation. That reputation is something you earn randomly, and you also lose it for no reason. I do not agree with Iago, especially because we know him as being manipulative. Cassio lost his reputation in one night; however he lost it because of the way Iago portrayed Him to Othello, not because of what actually happened. Cassio built up his reputation with years of hard work, and honesty. So it’s not how Iago put it, because good reputations usually do have reasons behind them, and losing them is not always necessarily deserved, but there is usually a reason why.

  21. I do agree with what Iago is saying, but I still think that reputation holds some importance. I would definitely agree that reputations can be undeserved, either good or bad. We are always judged by our mistakes. One mistake can give you a bad reputation forever. For example, you can be late for work one day and people will remember it more than if you show up early every other day (showing up late wouldn't ruin your reputation but it's the same idea). But there's also the opposite, where a good reputation can be undeserved. In Iago's case especially because, he is lying and scheming and plotting revenge, but everyone considers him honest and noble. For those reasons, reputations can't always be believed.

Although reputations aren't always reliable, I still think they have some importance. I don't think we should judge people only on their reputations though, you have to consider everything before you can judge someone. A good reputation shows if a person is hard working or reliable, and people should recognize these traits in others. Even bad reputations need to be considered, because often it is not just one mistake that determines a bad reputation. People will work hard to build up a good reputation, and they should receive just as much recognition as those with bad reputations.

To conclude, I think that reputations are important, but they aren't what determines how a person really is, there are many other aspects you need to consider.

  22. Reputation is something very important when developing relationships as well as when you apply for anything from a loan to a job. The only thing is that reputation can be manipulated depending on who its coming from. If someone you don’t like is asked to give a short explanation on your reputation they may not be completely honest. I don’t agree with Iago’s quote because i don't’ think reputation is an abstract. I believe that reputation is a unified idea on your personality or actions kind of like gossip told from person to person that can also be altered to benefit someone or hurt someone at any time. It isn't just a type of self critique.

In Othello, reputation is one of the only real ways you could judge someone at that time because their wasn't an in depth folder on each person as their is now. People were know for past actions and types of relationships instead of potential or possible change in a person. Iago is altering and destroying Cassio’s reputation in order for people to stop trusting him and remove his position in the army. This is how lies and rumors are spread and as many people know they can ruin someones social life and career.

To conclude, I do believe reputation is very important and I believe it is an actual existing thing. Iago is extremely good at using people reputations at finding people weaknesses and using the reputation to his advantage.
